Kyri Tsappas and Somaye bring you a night of jazz and poetry with a hint of the Middle East.

Somaye is a jazz singer who prides herself on performing songs with meaning and incorporating poetry and cross-cultural influences that define today’s London into her sets.

Her emotive voice is backed by the silky sound of “genius guitarist” Kyri Tsappas; a combination reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, which has wowed audiences.

Their performances are punctuated by Somaye’s powerful poetry and the Persian influenced arrangements of jazz standards, which Somaye plays on the tombak (Iranian hand drum). These display an originality that can only emerge from London’s cultural melting pot.

Ever wondered about the sound of the recorder, other than that of thirty kids blasting away in a school music lesson? Featuring music from the twentieth century minimalist period, this night explores the rich and wondrous sounds of the recorder in the relaxed and intimate setting of Charlie Wrights Music Lounge.

Performing on recorders of various shapes and sizes, musicians from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, led by Caoimhe de Paor, will be performing music by composers from England, Germany and Sweden.

The evening will showcase solo works with piano, works with delay pedal, Philip Glass’ duet Piece in the Shape of a Square on two bass recorders, and a quartet by Fulvio Caldini. In bringing the recorder away from the classroom stereotype and formal concert setting, while exploring its potential in contemporary repertoire, away from Early Music, this evening hopes to expand on the recorders’ audience and to broaden this audiences’ musical horizon.

Recorders – Caoimhe de Paor, Miriam Nerval, Lydia Gosnell, Sophie Creaner

Piano – Siwan Rhys

Doors 7 pm // Show 8.30 pm

The rix’tet is a swingin’ French quintet that celebrates vocal jazz, in the tradition of the great North American crooners from the 50′s such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett or Nat King Cole.

Django Reinhardt’s large influence gives an acoustic gypsy sound to the band that gladly delves into this repertoire to play a gypsy waltz or even borrow English pop melodies and add them to their special French cuisine.

Led by guitarist singer Rix, the musicians Stephane Garcia Tudéla (snare), Pascal Fallot (bass), Joachim Montbord (guitar) and Jérome Dubois (trumpet and French horn) give style and character to the whole thing, the charm of this unique band works on a large public.

Sean Haefeli is an innovative pianist-vocalist and lyricist-composer, distinctively modern and yet, traditionally skilled. He represents a new breed, schooled in jazz, soul and hip-hop, able to execute with an emcee’s sense of flow, a crooner’s melodic sensibility, and a jazz pianist’s deft improvisations.

Since 2002, Sean has self-produced and released three albums, each taking the listener on an eclectic and personal journey.
The poet-reviewer, Kalamu ya Salaam, describes his sound as: “a cross between Ezra Pound in the metro and some alternative spoken word down by the Green Mill in Chicago…he takes unexpected twists and turns, puts lyrics you have to listen to at least thrice in order to decipher the deeptitudes being discussed.
Sometimes it swings, sometimes it grooves but there is always something emotionally moving going on.”

“Showcasing his smooth vocals, he blurs the lines between singing and it’s more melodic cousin spoken word, often fluctuating between both deliveries within the same song. Proving himself quite the adept lyricist as well, Haefeli’s sound is traditional enough to appeal to jazz purists, yet contemporary enough to appeal to all others.” -Soulbounce

“Hella excited about this July ‘Next Step’ winner of ours! Berlin based pianist, vocalist, lyricist, and composer, Sean Haefeli mesmerized us with his vocal jazz that’s sprinkled with welcome notes of Jose James and Gil Scott Heron. Sean’s sound blends jazz, soul, hip hop, and spoken word to birth warm, honest, and intimate music…” -Giant Step

Recently released 3rd album, RISE:
