March 18, 2010
t Wo Music presents: 1) "THE MAN WHO LAUGHS" featuring Fumi Okiji and Stefano Kalonaris 2) "Irreverents"
1st Band - "THE MAN WHO LAUGHS" featuring Fumi Okiji and Stefano Kalonaris
The Man Who Laughs is a new project featuring singer, Fumi Okiji
and guitarist, Stefano Kalonaris, that premiered at last year's London
Jazz Festival. The music traverses blues, Tin Pan Alley, free jazz and
electronic music, using effects, sounds and samples to create unique
interpretations of some favourite and not so well-known jazz standards.
Okiji's rich contralto coupled with the inventive use Kalonaris makes
of the guitar creates a truly original sound. Expect anything from
beautifully sung ballads over spiralling soundscapes to raw blues
hollers rippling with energy.
'Humble, strange, unexpected, Fumi Okiji
and Stefano Kalonaris’s gig is as much an art performance as a concert.
Their nocturnal and dream-like songs are an unusual experience, and
gave the local residents of Walthamstow a soft electroshock.' (Anais
Bremond, London Jazz Festival 2009)
2nd Band - "Irreverents"
The Irreverents is a 5-piece instrumental party funk
band, an organic groove factory, providing hard hitting funk, sweet
riffs & bouncy tunes for ass-shaking occasions.
Some of the music is composed by Francesc Marco; some of it is left
unplanned. The band has been developing for some time its own way of
collectively improvising music for dancing, focussing on groove and
form, seeking to move away from the jazz-funk territory where solos and
improvisation tend to detract from dancing. The band's approach might
be better desrcibed as spontaneous composition than improvisation as
such. All the musicians are familiar with jazz in one of its
incarnations and strongly rhythmical musical traditions from Africa and
Latin America.
There are many influences. Groove, sound and attitude are
inspired by old style funk bands such as the Meters, the JBs and Fela
Kuti’s Orchestra. For composition and arrangement, the M-Base movement
has paved the way for decades. On a local level , the F-ire Collective,
with which all band members have collaborated, and especially Barak
Schmool’s Timeline, has helped and inspired the them to explore
creative and meaningful rhythmical music.

Seddik Zebiri – The Seeds of Creation
Moving to London in 1975, Zebiri started playing at the Winchester Project, and four years later, set up his band, The Seeds of Creation. Although the line-up has changed many times over the years, the principles remain the same. “My vision is to create peace – the band is multi-faith and multi-culture.” His most recent project Africa Africa, in tune with this spirit, brings together musicians from across Africa.
Over his long career, Zebiri has played with Abdullah Ibrahim, Masta African Drummers and The Art Ensemble of Chicago and the dance act Firestarter. He has taught in schools and worked with special needs adults and children. Zebiri would love to do more recording and his dream is to set up a North African Arts Centre – though he will never stop performing. “When I perform it is like love – you’re giving something and taking something at the same time.”
